The following three questions refer to material you were to read in preparation for class. These questions require you to write a three or four sentence response. It is OK to answer 'I don't know' - but STATE WHY you are confused! (Don't just say 'I don't know' - you probably DO!) Each WarmUp worth 3 points if answered on time and must be submitted via the web. See notes page for prior Warm Ups and student responses.
QUESTION 1: In your own words, how could TWO species form from ONE species that becomes separated by a canyon, a river, or a highway? (For a hint, see allopatric speciation in your notes!)
QUESTION 2: Even if the world were to achieve ZPG (zero population growth) today, the human population will continue to grow (not level off) for more than 60 years. Why?
QUESTION 3: If world production of food were to increase such that there was more than enough food for all the people on the planet, why would 20,000 people still die of starvation every day? Please read the notes before answering this question! See myth for more info
QUESTION 4: "MY SUGGESTIONS FOR N100". This is Dr. Marrs' last semester of N100 (snif!) and Dr. Martin Vaughn will be taking over as lead instructor. While Dr. Vaughn has many years of experience in teaching biology courses, a few suggestions about N100 from current students may be useful to him in organizing this course for the future! Can you give him one suggestion/tip for N100 - to make it better or different than you experienced it? (PS. One thing we can't change is the lecture hall format!) For instance: more/less genetics, more/less 'science in the news', more traditional zoology/ecology, more 'human anatomy/physiology', more attention to textbook readings, more/less use of the web, more/less in class exercises or required homework...you decide!!!
You can change your mind as many times as you like before hitting Submit. Print this page before submitting if you want to keep a record of your answers. You will get a confirmation box to let you know that your answers were submitted, and will return to the N100 main page after submitting.
