The following three questions refer to material you were to read in preparation for class. These questions require you to write a three or four sentence response. It is OK to answer 'I don't know' - but STATE WHY you are confused! (Don't just say 'I don't know' - you probably DO!) Each WarmUp worth 3 points if answered on time and must be submitted via the web. See notes page for prior Warm Ups and student responses.

QUESTION 1: The Cloning Academy Awards: Can you think of any movies that center around cloning, or are based around DNA in some way? If so, what is the 'take-home message' of that movie?

QUESTION 2: Where do Human Embryonic Stem Cells (hES cells) come from? What are some of the ethical implications of using hES cells for medical research?

QUESTION 3: Dolly the sheep is a genetic twin, or clone, of a sheep that was born 6 years earlier than Dolly. Read the material for today. Does Dolly have parents? If so, who were her parents ? (consider genetic, biological, surrogate as terms).

QUESTION 4: [Totally optional] There are tremendous benefits to developing therapeutic cloning technologies for treatment of diabetes, Alzheimers, etc. In your opinion, do these benefits justify their use in medical research, given that a human blastocyst (a clone of the patient) must be briefly created and then used to obtain the cells?? (Your answers will be kept confidential!)

You can change your mind as many times as you like before hitting Submit. Print this page before submitting if you want to keep a record of your answers. You will get a confirmation box to let you know that your answers were submitted, and will return to the N100 main page after submitting.
