Dr. Vlahos' research is primarily focused on the role of kinases and phosphatases involved in the progression of heart failure. The approach used is to identify and validate the target, develop assays, and elucidate the signaling pathway. The ultimate goal is to develop inhibitors against these cellular signaling targets and to determine the impact of the resulting inhibition on signal transduction pathways and disease. Specific targets that have been studied include phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), protein kinase C (PKC), and p38 MAP-kinase.
