The yeast sterol biosynthetic pathway and its end product
sterol, ergosterol, present two major targets for antifungal
drugs. Accelerated research in the area of antifungal drug
development is required due to increased fungal infections
brought about by advanced medical procedures, such as cancer
chemotherapy and transplantation technology, and human diseases
such as AIDS, all of which result in impaired immune system
function. Our research seeks to identify reactions essential
to sterol synthesis and metabolism in order to identify new
targets for antifungal chemotherapy.
