Undergraduate Research

As a research university, IUPUI encourages undergraduates to experience the discovery of new knowledge through supervised research with the faculty. A student may enroll in independent study for credit (K490) with any of the Biology Faculty. In this independent study setting, an individual student meets weekly or biweekly with a faculty member, who tailors reading and writing assignments to the special scholarly interests of the student. In other cases, students may enroll in supervised independent research (K493) in a faculty member's laboratory as part of their research group.

The Department of Biology offers a wide variety of research options. Students may work with faculty members on research projects in the immune system, brain development, hormone biology, spinal cord regeneration, yeast gene cloning and antifungal drug studies, membrane biochemistry and biophysics, cancer biology, kidney physiology, molecular development, tumor biology, plant molecular biology, plant cell biology, and wound repair and tissue engineering.
