UNDERGRADUATE FAQs

1.  Q:  What scholarships are available to undergraduate students?

A:  The Department of Biology awards scholarships through Honors Convocation.   The best place to look for scholarship opportunities is through the Financial Aid Office and the School of Science Dean's office.

http://www.iupui.edu/~scentral/

2.  Q:  What courses will transfer?

A:  This is an impossible question to answer.  The Department of Biology evaluates courses after you’re accepted into the School of Science. One may also check the PACE system at:

http://appserv.iu.edu/pace/index.asp

3.  Q:  How long is veterinary school?

A:  Four years after one is accepted into the program.  An undergraduate can apply to veterinary school after 3 years of undergraduate work, if all pre-requisites have been taken.  IUPUI does not have a Veterinary school.  One may complete the pre-requisites here and then transfer to Purdue or any other school that has a Veterinary program.

4.  Q:  As an undergraduate, am I eligible for research opportunities?  If so, how do I go about applying?

A:  Visit the Biology Advisor for details.  Seniors graduating with a B.S. must do a Research Project, K493.  So, the question on how to apply for research opportunities is as follows:

1.    Get Started Early.  Start thinking about your research project by the end of your sophomore year or beginning of your junior year.

2.    Identify a General Area of Interest.  Read the summary of faculty’s research interest available in the biology office (SL306) or advisor’s office (SL322).

3.    Learn about Your Professors.  Talk with other students, especially ones who are in research labs.  Talk to your professors when you are taking their courses.

4.    Decide on Two or Three Professors.  Don’t limit to one professor.

5.    Make the Initial Contact.  Email is an easy way to make the first contact or go to the professor’s lab.  Tell them about yourself, how far you are in your studies and suggest that you would like to talk about working in his/her lab.

6.    Make an Appointment.  Don’t expect the professor to stop everything for you.  Be prepared to set an appointment for later.

7.    Ask the Professor about Their Research Interests

8.    Determine if you feel a “Match” with the Professor and the work.  Both of you need to agree on this.

9.    Make a Second Contact with your Chosen Professor and Agree Upon the Research Project. Work out the number of credit hours per semester and the number of semesters total of work.

10.  Be certain that you and the Professor have clear understandings of  your responsibilities, such as number of hours to work each week, responsibilities in the laboratory, progress reports, etc.  Typically, one hour credit equals 8-10 hours per week of research in the lab. A minimum of 2 and a maximum of 3 credits is required.

11.  Get authorization from the Biology Advisor.

12.  Register.

5.  Q:  Does the Biology Department provide tutors for courses?

A:  No, the Biology department does not provide tutorial services, however you are encouraged to contact the University College Learning Center.

6.    Q: How do I bypass University College advising and become a Biology major?

A: The Enrollment Services evaluates high school transcripts and decides whether a student may be admitted directly into the School of Science.

7.  Q:  Where can I get B.S. and B.A. requirements?

A:  You may obtain B.S. and B.A. requirements at
